High potential and gifted education
The staff at Minmi Public School are committed to the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy, with a strong focus on talent development across intellectual, creative, social-emotional, and physical domains.
We are committed to recognising high potential in all its forms and dedicated to nurturing that potential through quality teaching, enriching opportunities, and focused support. Our programs aim to challenge, engage, and extend students, helping them develop and succeed in their areas of strength.
Shadow Judging
Some of our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) students from Years 2 to 6 recently had a wonderful time participating in the Shadow Judging program for the Children's Book of the Year Awards.
These students engaged with six shortlisted picture books, examining them critically and evaluating them against the judging criteria. This activity not only enhanced their analytical skills but also encouraged them to discuss and debate the merits of each book.
After thoughtful deliberation, the students voted on their favourite title and collaborated to create a creative response, showcasing their interpretation and appreciation of the literature. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in the world of children's literature while developing their critical thinking and teamwork skills. What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Minmi Public School, HPGE lives in everyday practice. Many students have high potential, and we help that potential to grow into something powerful.
- Teachers identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment and extension programs and acceleration.
- Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
- Groups are flexible, students take lead roles, and feedback is strengths-based with clear goals and self-assessment.
- Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners
- Literacy and Numeracy are targeted in small groups with focused instruction.
Every student is individual, so opportunities are flexible and diverse.
-
Students deepen strengths through debating and public speaking competitions.
-
Leadership grows through the SRC, JAECG and peer mentoring. Wellbeing is made visible with PAX Leadership, Principal Awards and The Resilience Project.
-
Daily life invites curiosity and belonging, with lunchtime activities including art, chess club, construction and more. The SRC runs organised games as well as arts and craft activities.
-
Sport matters too, with PSSA sport, training and coaching across a number of disciplines. Peer Support Sport offers opportunities for leadership in the context of sport. Team and individual representation across zone, regional and state levels is supported and encouraged.
Our students engage in a wide range of statewide programs designed to extend and enrich their potential.
- They participate in opportunities such as the Premier's Spelling Bee, Premier’s Multicultural Public Speaking, Rotary Peace Poster Competition, NSW Reconciliation Challenge, Premier's Reading Challenge, and the Newcastle Permanent Maths Competition.
- Support from the NSW Department of Education and statewide initiatives is available for high potential and gifted students. We assist with entries, preparation, and reflection to ensure every experience contributes to ongoing learning.
